About Us
The Natural History Collections Club was founded during the 2017 Fall semester with the mission to learn more about and help the natural history collections at Virginia Tech, like the Entomology Collection in Seitz Hall, the Massey Herbarium in Derring Hall, the Vertebrate Collection in Cheatham Hall, and so much more. Most students are unaware of these valuable resources right here in Blacksburg, so we strive to spread the word about how amazing our collections are. As such, our biweekly club meetings fall into three different categories: to learn, to help, and to share:
To Learn
The Natural History Collections Club has meetings to learn about the collections on campus. At these meetings, we receive tours of the collection by those that maintain them. We get to see their specimens, learn how they are maintained, and hear about their history.
To Help
Once we know more about the collection, the Natural History Collections Club can begin to help out. At these meetings, we volunteer for the collection in any way we can, such as organizing, preparing, and transcribing specimens. Through this, we learn more about their curation.
To Share
Many Natural History Collections Club members have a passion for a certain aspect of natural history. As such, we often share these passions at outreach events so that others can learn about collections and their importance. These meetings are rewarding and great experience.
Because natural history collections cover a variety of disciplines, our club members come from many different majors and backgrounds, with everything from wildlife conservation to horticulture represented. No matter what you are interested in, there is a collection at Virginia Tech that shares your passion:
Our Collections
Bug Zoo
The Bug Zoo in Seitz Hall has many live arthopods used for outreach, especially at Hokie BugFest.
